What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest continuously practiced systems of medicine in the world, with roots in China stretching back thousands of years. It's a core part of Chinese medicine, which rests on a simple idea: health is a matter of balance. Central to that is Qi (pronounced "chee"), the body's vital energy, which flows through channels called meridians. When that flow is smooth, the body functions well; when it's disrupted or blocked, discomfort and illness can follow.

Seen through a Western lens, supporting the flow of Qi is a way of helping the body's systems return to balance, nudging it back toward homeostasis, the steady internal state in which everything works as it should.

In practice, acupuncture involves placing fine, sterile, single-use needles at specific points along the meridians to ease that flow and support the body's own healing. The needles are remarkably thin — some no wider than a human hair and bear little resemblance to the needles you know from a doctor's office. Over centuries of refinement, and now alongside a growing body of modern research, acupuncture has become both a time-tested and increasingly well-studied approach to health.

What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Various dried spices and herbs in open bags at a market, including turmeric, chili powder, cumin, and dried herbs.

Like acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years to help people feel better and stay well. It rests on the idea that your body, mind, and daily life are deeply connected. Rather than chasing a single symptom, it looks for what's underneath it, and works to support the whole picture.

A Chinese herbal formula is built from natural ingredients such as roots, bark, leaves, seeds, sometimes minerals, combined for a specific purpose. Sometimes the right fit is a custom formula, tailored and adjusted as you change. Other times it's a well-chosen patent formula; a time-tested, ready-made combination that's convenient and easy to take. Part of my work is matching not just the herbs to your needs, but the form to your life, whether that's raw herbs, ground herbs, or capsules.

The aim is to support your body's own ability to heal. To shore up where you're depleted, settle what's overactive, and help you feel more like yourself. Herbs can work on their own or alongside acupuncture, and they're often where the steadier, between-visit progress happens..

How Can Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Help You? Why Choose Eventide?

You know your body better than anyone.

If something feels off, that matters even when your labs come back "fine." Maybe you're exhausted despite sleeping enough. Maybe it's migraines, digestive issues, stress, hormonal shifts, or pain that won't quit. Maybe your back "went out" and the medication isn't touching it. Whether it's a chronic condition that's worn on you for years or an acute problem that just threw you off course, there's an individualized approach here.

It starts with listening.

Not just to a diagnosis, but to you. What's changed? What's getting in the way of your life? What are you hoping to get back to? Rather than chasing a single symptom, Chinese medicine looks at the whole picture including your energy, sleep, digestion, stress, pain, and mood are all part of the conversation. Because living with health challenges touches more than the body; it reaches into your mood, relationships, confidence, and the things that bring you joy.

The goal isn't perfection, it's progress.

Less pain, more energy, better sleep, clearer thinking, a deeper sense of balance, and feeling more capable of the things that matter most to you.

Tailored to you, including which tools fit.

Sometimes that's acupuncture on its own, working in the moment to ease pain and calm the nervous system. Sometimes it's herbal medicine, working quietly between visits on the deeper pattern. And often, especially with chronic conditions. it's both together, reaching further than either does alone. As both a Registered Nurse and a Doctor of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, I know the strengths of modern medicine and its limits. Whether you're new to the acupuncture world or well traveled within it, I'll always explain my thinking so you can make informed decisions about your care.
